Posture Alignment Training

Do you find yourself slouching throughout the day? Have you noticed your spine feels stiff and those last couple hours of your workday? Your postural alignment may be to blame.

In our modern world, most of us spend our day staring at a computer screen, riding in our car, or looking down at our phones. These forward head postures can cause stress to the muscles and joints of the neck and back.

At Graham Therapy & Fitness in Bethesda, our therapists can assess your posture and help you restore your alignment, so you move and feel better!

What does postural alignment mean?

Postural alignment refers to how your body is positioned when standing, sitting, or lying down. Good postural alignment means that your body is balanced and well-aligned, while incorrect postural alignment can lead to muscle imbalances and strain on the body.

Our spines consist of four natural curves: the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral. When the spine is in its natural position, the vertebrae stack up over one another, and we call this “good posture” or sometimes “neutral spine.”

These natural curves, along with the intervertebral discs, absorb and distribute stresses from everyday activities such as sitting, standing, and walking or more intense activities such as running and jumping.

Postural alignment issues can manifest in everyday life in several ways. Common disorders and conditions caused by improper postural alignment include muscle strain, joint pain, and back pain.

Slouching can cause the spine in your neck and lower back to become straighter while the upper back becomes excessively rounded. This produces a forward-head posture, humped upper back, and flattened lower back.

Improper postural alignment may be associated with altered posture and sometimes more serious conditions, including:

Scoliosis

a 3-dimensional condition in which the spine is curved to the side, is positioned more forward or backward and has a twist in the spine

Kyphosis

an excessive curvature of the spine in the thoracic region or mid back, resulting in a round back appearance

Excessive lordosis

an excessive curvature of the spine in the lumbar region or lower back, resulting in an exaggerated arch in the lower back
